Battle Born Steel Crafts Vegas Landmarks: Founder Mike Williams is Valley Native

Mike Williams has watched the Las Vegas skyline change and grow for many years. His family had deep generational roots in Southern Nevada dating back to the 1960s.

Williams attended VoTech High School. He played team sports like baseball and volleyball, learned to weld and studied the steel industry.

“Monster Garage” and other heavy-metal shows on cable TV channels sparked a passion in Williams for motor sports that included off-road racing and vehicle fabrication.

After apprenticing with local steel companies to develop his metal fabrication skills, Williams turned all his energies into founding his own company during 2018, naming it Battle Born Steel, LLC.

One of Battle Born Steel’s most high-profile projects during the last five years was a nine-story Car Vending Machine for Carvana, an online automotive dealership that had been expanding its company services nationwide.

The Las Vegas installation by Battle Born Steel was the 28th Carvana steel tower built within the USA.

Each vertical parking structure automatically dispensed cars onto elevators, for delivery down to waiting customers on the ground floor.

After the Las Vegas project installation was completed, Battle Born Steel was contracted to build additional Carvana Car Vending Machine towers within the Texas cities of Houston and Ft. Worth, as well as the California city of San Diego.

His company began fabricating steel components and miscellaneous projects for local customers until 2020, when Battle Born Steel landed its first major structural steel-building project.

“You get one shot in this town,” said Williams. “When you get your opportunity, you shine.”

Since then, Battle Born Steel has grown its employee headcount from 12 full-time staff to about 100 employees, today. Williams has led a company of welders, steel fabricators, detailers, engineers and project managers who continue to build out the building landscape within the Las Vegas Valley.

His dedicated team of professionals have amassed more than 60 years of collective experience in steel fabrication, structural building installations and transparent management techniques.

Employees were all focused on building strong interpersonal relationships with customers, component vendors, industry partners and each other through strong communication skills.

As a result, Battle Born Steel now completes about 40 to 50 construction projects each year and is still growing.

Partners include general contractors who also have deep roots in the Las Vegas Valley, such as Martin Harris Construction, The Penta Building Group, Burke Construction Group, Layton, Whiting-Turner, Parkway, Boyd Martin Construction and Bentar Development.

While most Las Vegas residents only see a finished multistory building completed by one of these general contractors, underneath is a steel-frame skeleton built by Battle Born Steel that holds the structure together for a lifetime of reliable service. Current Battle Born Steel projects include the I-215 West building, Las Vegas Metro Police Training Center, Allegiant Training Facility, Intermountain Healthcare Center and West Henderson Field House along with many others.

The company’s management efforts and construction operations were certified by the American Institute of Steel Construction. AISC is a standards organization that required a higher level of documentation for all the components and processes utilized during each construction project. This extra attention to detail helped Battle Born Steel be a part of specific projects that require this certification that include public and government construction.

Williams looks forward to expanding his company footprint. Recent plans have included a new state-of-the-art steel fabrication facility that can be more fully automated and capable of efficiently meeting multiple project timelines. His company has connected with the College of Southern Nevada and its Debra March Center for Excellence in Henderson, to help educate a skilled workforce of future metal-fabrication employees.

The Battle Born Steel team have planted their own roots into the Las Vegas Valley by creating building landscapes and interpersonal community relationships that will last a lifetime.
